Gordon Murray talked about his new city car, but kept it under wraps for now....
Murray's minicar: McLaren F1 designer reveals tiny car plan
On the first anniversary of the founding of his new company, British car designer Gordon Murray--yes, that Gordon Murray of McLaren F1 fame--has revealed a radical city car with dimensions so tiny they're almost impossible to comprehend. With a footprint about two-thirds that of the diminutive Smart and nearly half that of the new Mini, the Gordon Murray Design T25 may well deliver on Murray's ...

Lola goes golden at Goodwood
Lola Cars marks its golden anniversary this year and will gather top cars and drivers at the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed to help celebrate. Lola was founded by Eric Broadley in 1958. His first car was the "Broadley Special," which he built for competition in the Ford Ten Special class of...

Join the party: Coker, Lola, Toyota share AutoWeek's 50th
Joseph "Corky" Coker was four years old when the tire company that bears his family name was founded 50 years ago. Back then, his father, Harold, mostly sold tires for everyday use, a far cry from today's Coker Tire Co., which primarily stocks and sells classic vintage tires (or reproductions)...

2009 Bentley Continental Flying Spur Speed--Great gets better: The Speed is not your average Flying Spur
It doesn't sound like much, but 48 hp is enough to get the $198,500 2009 Bentley Continental Flying Spur Speed past the velvet rope that separates 600-hp production cars from the rabble. The standard twin-turbo W12-powered Continental Flying Spur gets only 552 hp, but what do you want for only...

First Nissan GT-R delivered in Los Angeles
The first of Nissan's GT-R supercars was delivered in the United States on Monday morning--and it was hardly a low-key event. The first customer, Daryl Alison, of Costa Mesa, California, took delivery at 12:01 a.m. Pacific in a Los Angeles dealership in a ceremony with longtime Nissan racer...

SHORT STINT: 2008 Touareg 2 V10 TDI
OUR TAKE: Short of a bulldozer, not much else will match this thing for torque. Nailing the throttle elicits fits of giggles; the experience is so different from what you might expect. It takes off from lights like a shot and gives the impression you could tow anything if you had to. It...

Funeral for a friend: For a man who loved hot rods and life, is there a better way to be sent off on his next run?
A recent funeral procession through the eastern suburbs of Detroit was uniquely Motown. Trailing behind a hearse was a mile-long procession of hot rods and one-off custom cars--40 or so gleaming examples that bonded friends from Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. The procession was in honor of Fred...

Kevin A. Wilson: Here We Go Again
I just explained to another smart friend why the guy with the car that runs on water--you've probably seen the video in endless e-mail circulation, where he first uses a torch and then shows a car running on the same gas (hydrogen and oxygen) from electrolysis of water--is not the magic solution to ...

New from Novitec: 717-hp twin-supercharger Ferrari
From the "Things We Don't Need But Want Badly" file comes Novitec's Rosso Ferrari 430 Scuderia. The German tuner of Italian hardware upped an already super supercar to 717 hp and 532 lb-ft of torque, from the 510 hp and 347 lb-ft it comes fitted with out of the box. Novitec Rosso was not...

Alabama could get new VW assembly plant
Volkswagen's management board will discuss the carmaker's planned new North American factory on Tuesday, July 8. Alabama appears to be the favored location for the plant. VW is considering opening a U.S. plant to help reach its ambition of more than tripling its annual U.S. sales by 2018 to 1...

Hyundai Santa Fe to get a 4-cylinder
As fuel prices soar, Hyundai plans to add a four-cylinder engine to its Santa Fe lineup when the crossover is redesigned in 2010. The Santa Fe now is available only with 2.7-liter and 3.3-liter V6s. The redesigned Santa Fe also will get a six-speed automatic transmission, said John Krafcik, vice ...

America's best drivers
If you haven't been in an accident in 10 years, look out, because you're due. That's according to the "Allstate America's Best Drivers Report," which ranks cities across the country for the likelihood--or lack thereof--that car accidents will occur there. Topping this year's list as the city ...

Top IndyCar drivers set to remain at teams
Helio Castroneves and Team Penske president Tim Cindric confirmed that the driver will continue with the team for years to come after agreeing on a "multiyear" deal. Now Tony Kanaan is mulling an offer to remain with Andretti Green Racing for another three years. Castroneves never seriously...

Mosley wants to force F1 changes
FIA president Max Mosley is seizing a long-awaited opportunity finally to compel Formula One teams to accept new technical regulations for 2011 that will meet his objectives of reduced costs, improved fuel economy and more exciting racing. Mosley set a deadline of Oct. 3 for teams to make...

Dario Franchitti says return to IndyCar unlikely
Dario Franchitti is not sure of his NASCAR future, but last year's Indianapolis 500 and IndyCar Series champion wants to remain in stock cars. Franchitti lost his Sprint Cup ride on July 1 when team owner Chip Ganassi shut down his unsponsored No. 40 Dodge team. Ganassi gave Franchitti the option...

Lewis Hamilton dominates the British Grand Prix
As Lewis Hamilton worked through his final qualifying run at the Silverstone circuit, the message over the radio from his McLaren-Mercedes team was firm: "Don't overdrive." He had done just that on his previous run, driving off the road and nearly into a spin. The lurid tail-out style was...

Ryan Hunter-Reay survives a wild Watkins Glen race
If labels are true, the IndyCar Series now has a menace, a lunatic and a new race winner. The race at Watkins Glen International was messy, silly and, in the case of winner Ryan Hunter-Reay, gratifying. There were three accidents during a single caution period, including a rookie mistake by...

Kyle Busch wins again, this time at Daytona
NASCAR caught a break with its July 4 weekend Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway. Finally, the late-night conversations and sports-talk babble could turn to on-track excitement rather than warmed-over discussions about what some see as difficult times ahead for this once-bulletproof...
